Technical School Funding

Technical School Funding

Technical schools are gaining more recognition in the national education picture. With the demand for skilled laborers in the workforce nationally increasing, technical schools are becoming a better higher education option than ever. States that are dependent on manufacturing jobs are starting to invest more in the future of their local economy through technical colleges. In response to a poor local job market, Wisconsin has just recently invested an additional $95 million in their education budget to help restructure their technical schools. Washington is also looking for additional funding for their state’s technical college budget, stating that “by 2016, 75 percent of the state’s residents will need at least a one-year certification to get a living wage job”.  Other states are taking similar measures to ensure a highly skilled workforce.

technical_school_funding_bay_state_techWhile government funding might be scarce for many technical colleges, more students continue to consider a technical education each year. The vocational and career education route was sometimes seen as the lesser alternative to the traditional academia, and government policy was made to echo that sentiment. Now, as more students are forced to think through all of their educational and career options, the job opportunities that come from a technical education without the accompanying college loans make it an increasingly popular option.

Technical schools are working to increase awareness about this lack of government funding, and are doing so by highlighting the national trend of an increased need for skilled laborers in the workforce. Bay State School of Technology advocates for increased funding for technical schools in the state of Massachusetts, and is always looking to expand their student base. Bay State School of Technology offers its students access to Federal Title IV Pell Grants, SEOG Grants, Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized student loans, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts MassGrants.  Our Financial Aid office is ready to help students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and will gladly estimate a student’s Financial Aid eligibility.  Bay State is also approved for a variety of education funding by the Veterans’ Administration, and by many of the Eastern Massachusetts Career Centers.
